Arbor Day Resource Pack
Arbor Day and World Environment Day are celebrated in New Zealand on the 5th June each year.

Arbor Day was first celebrated on April 10th in Nebraska, USA in 1872. The idea of setting one day aside for the planting of trees was started by Mr J Sterling Morton, a Nebraskan. More than 1,000,000 trees were planted in Nebraska the first year. As other states in the US saw Nebraska’s barren plains become green with trees, they also adopted the plan.

New Zealand’s first Arbor Day planting was in Greytown in the Wairarapa on 3 July 1890. The first official celebration took place in Wellington in August 1892, with the planting of Pohutakawa and Norfolk pines along Thorndon Esplanade.

Since 1977 New Zealand has celebrated Arbor Day on June 5, World Environment Day. Arbor Day on the 5th June marks the beginning of the planting season and a time to celebrate the unique biodiversity of our country.

The native trees of this country provide food and shelter for our indigenous wildlife, and are intregal to the special character of New Zealand. Many schools throughout the world observe Arbor Day with a week of programmes devoted to the conservation of forests, soils, fish, wildlife, parks, and recreation areas.

“Arbor Day is a reminder to all New Zealanders that we can all play a part in protecting the native forests and wildlife which are left, so our children and grandchildren will be able to experience a remnant of this country as it once was”

This resource is available as a printed Pack or on CD-ROM. The cost is $35 (Incl P&P) per Pack or CD, or $55 for Pack and CD-ROM.
