Every year on the 25th December, New Zealanders and people around the world have a special holiday. The holiday is named Christmas Day, and it is a special day that means many things to many people.
For Christians it celebrates the birth of Christ (Jesus) for others it’s a time to spend with family and friends to share food and gifts.
The word Christmas comes from the words Cristes maesse or “Christ’s Mass”
The tradition of gifts seems to have started with the gifts that the wise men brought to Jesus. They presented him with gifts of gold and incense and of myrrh. No one was really in the habit of exchanging elaborate gifts until late in the 1800’s.
The first story about Santa originally came from the Netherlands. Santa Claus was really Saint Nicholas, a rich man who helped poor people.
He was so kind that the church made him a Saint.
Today people say that Santa Claus rides through the sky on a sledge pulled by reindeer.
He stops at every house and leaves presents for the children. He wears a red coat and has a long white beard.
Different cultures believe in different characters.
This resource is available as a printed Pack or on CD-ROM. The cost is $35 (Incl P&P) per Pack or CD, or $55 for Pack and CD-ROM.
