Waitangi Day is celebrated every year on the 6th February. It commemorates a very historic and important event that took place in New Zealand.
At Waitangi in the Bay of Islands a treaty was signed on February 6th, 1840, between 46 local Maori chiefs and Captain William Hobson, who represented Queen Victoria and the British Government.
The Treaty consisted of 3 articles:
In the first article the chiefs granted the Queen of England the right to govern New Zealand. In the second article the chiefs were guaranteed possession of their Lands, Estates, Forests, Fisheries and other properties, providing they agreed to sell land exclusively to the Queen or her representatives. The third article granted the Maori people the rights and privileges of British subjects. Later several copies of the treaty were made and taken to other parts of New Zealand. This was in order to obtain signatures of as many chiefs as possible and as many as 500 were obtained. Eventually on May 21st 1840, William Hobson made a proclamation claiming British sovereignty over the whole of New Zealand.
Over the years that followed the signing of The Treaty of Waitangi, the question of what principles and obligations the Treaty placed on both sides has been a subject of contention. However, in more recent years it has been revived and used as a basis for settling long standing disputes and grievances over the ownership of land and other resources.
This resource is available as a printed Pack or on CD-ROM. The cost is $35 (Incl P&P) per Pack or CD, or $55 for Pack and CD-ROM.
